Frequently Asked Questions About Our Brooklyn Recording Studio
Below are some common questions about working at Degraw Sound, a Brooklyn recording studio in Gowanus. If you don’t see yours, just reach out.
Is Degraw Sound a commercial recording studio in Brooklyn?
Sort of.
Degraw Sound is a fully built-out professional recording studio in the heart of Brooklyn, NY. Unlike a traditional commercial studio that’s primarily available for dry hire, most of the work we do is collaborative and all-inclusive. Artists typically come to us looking for support, guidance, and partnership — not just a room.
What is Degraw Sound?
Degraw Sound is a Brooklyn recording studio owned and operated by music producer and mixing engineer Ben Rice.
The studio was built to serve the needs of indie artists — stocked with a curated collection of instruments, sonic toys, and analog equipment. It’s designed to comfortably record full bands live, but it also feels cozy and comfortable when building a record one instrument at a time.
What do you do at Degraw Sound?
Our main focus is working closely with artists on music production and recording to help them make meaningful records.
That might be an artist releasing their first single or someone working on their tenth album. Wherever you are in your career, the goal is the same: to meet you where you are and help you create work that reflects this moment in your artistic journey.
Can I rent your Brooklyn recording studio by the day?
Yes.
When we’re not producing projects in-house, the studio is available for day rentals with our excellent house engineer, Leah.
Do I need a producer?
Maybe.
If you’re looking for a creative partner to help shape performances, arrangements, and the bigger picture of your project, a music producer can be incredibly valuable.
If you’re unsure, mention it when you reach out and we can talk it through.
What if I don’t have a band?
Totally normal. Totally doable.
Over the years we’ve built a trusted community of collaborators — world-class session musicians who are great players, quick learners, and genuinely good hangs.
Whether you need a full rhythm section or just one instrument, we can help assemble the right team for your record.
I started my record at home. Can you help?
Yes.
More and more artists are starting projects at home, which is great. When you’re ready to bring in a collaborator, elevate the recordings, or take things across the finish line, we’re here.
When reaching out, feel free to send a couple of rough bounces. It helps us focus the conversation.
Can you mix my single, EP, or album?
Absolutely.
Mixing is a big part of what we do. If you’re inquiring about mixing services, please include:
Number of songs
Timeline
Where it was recorded
Whether there’s a producer involved
What DAW it was recorded in (Pro Tools, Logic, Ableton, etc.)
Rough mixes
That helps us move efficiently.
How much does it cost to work at a Brooklyn recording studio? How much does it cost to work with a producer?
Fair questions.
To give you a real answer, we’ll need a bit more information about your project — number of songs, level of production, timeline, musicians involved, etc. Scope matters.
Our rates are in line with what it costs to make a record at a professional Brooklyn recording studio with an experienced team.
If you’re used to what it costs to live, eat, and make things happen in Brooklyn, our pricing will feel realistic.
The best next step is to reach out with details about your project so we can put together an accurate quote.
What don’t you do?
We don’t offer mastering, but we work with excellent mastering engineers and are happy to recommend someone.
We’re also not a rehearsal space, and we don’t offer equipment rentals.
Where is Degraw Sound located?
Degraw Sound is located in Gowanus, Brooklyn, NY. We’re easily accessible from Manhattan, surrounding neighborhoods, and Long Island via the LIRR. Once a session is booked, we’ll share all the details you’ll need to get here smoothly.
What genres do you typically work in?
We primarily work in indie rock, singer-songwriter, alternative, Shoegaze, rock, Americana, soul, punk, hardcore and adjacent genres. That said, we care more about intention and taste than strict genre lines. If the music feels honest and considered, we’re interested.
How long does it take to make a single, EP, or album?
Every project is different and moves at its own pace. We’ve made records that took a couple of days and records that took a couple of months — often it’s somewhere in the middle.
Once we understand your goals and scope, we’ll outline a realistic timeline together.
Do you help with arrangements and songwriting?
Yes.
If you’re looking for creative input on arrangements, instrumentation, or the overall direction of your record, that’s part of the production process. If you prefer to come in with everything mapped out and just need a great space and engineering support, that works too.
Do you work with artists outside of New York?
Absolutely.
We regularly mix and collaborate remotely. Files can be shared digitally, and we’ll establish a clear workflow before starting so the process feels seamless.
Artists often travel from out of town to work with us here in Brooklyn. We’ve welcomed artists from across the U.S., Canada, the UK, Europe, and South America. Wherever you’re from, if you’re interested in making great music, we’d love to collaborate.
What should I prepare before reaching out?
Helpful things to include:
Number of songs
Rough demos or references
Timeline
Whether you’re looking for production, tracking, mixing, or all of the above
The clearer the starting point, the more focused our first conversation can be.
Do you require a deposit?
Yes. A deposit is required to secure session dates, production projects, and mixing projects. We’ll go over details once the scope of the project is defined.
Is there parking or subway access?
Yes. We’re accessible by public transportation, and while there are parking options nearby, this is Brooklyn — street parking can be limited, so it’s best to plan accordingly.
